DISCRIMINATION IN THE WORKPLACE

Race. Religion. Disability. Pregnancy. Sexual Orientation. During the recruitment process as well as throughout the employment, it is illegal for the employers in Australia to discriminate against an employee based on these and other personal qualities or attributes.  
Nevertheless, workplace discrimination is a real and pressing issue, and candidates get their applications sidelined or overlooked due to these factors all the time.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

  • During the recruitment process, I had cleared the initial rounds and assessments, I just had the final interview to go through. My skills and knowledge were a perfect match for the company. I was confident that I would clear the interview round and be employed with the firm. However, after the interview process, I got the email that I was not selected for the job position. I took that as a positive criticism and decided to try harder for the next time. However, I had a close friend working in the same company. It had come to her notice that the company wanted a male employee. 
  • I was deeply saddened and disappointed on hearing this. I felt the need to file an official complaint against the Recruitment department of the company. 
  • However, I realized that I was not selected only based on my Gender, and not because I was incapable. I understood that not all firms are the same. And I will definitely crack the next interview, because I was confident with my knowledge and skills. 
  • If I were to face this scenario again, I will definitely lodge a complaint with the HR.
